Mahjong Solitaire—also written Mahjongg Solitaire or Mah-Jongg Solitaire—is a single-player tile-matching puzzle, not the traditional four-player game. Classic boards remove a free pair directly; Calm Mahjong keeps the same free-tile rule and brings each selected pair together in a four-space tray.
Calm Mahjong rules in four steps
Find a free tile
Look for a tile with no tile on top and an open left or right long side.
Move it to the tray
Tap the free tile to place it in one of the four tray spaces above the layout.
Find the exact match
Choose the other free tile with the same face. The matching pair clears from the tray.
Clear the layout
Remove every tile before four unmatched faces fill the tray. Hint, undo, and shuffle can help.
What counts as a free tile?
A tile is free when no other tile covers it and at least one of its long sides—the left or right—is open. A tile trapped between two neighbors cannot be selected, even when you can see its face. In stacked layouts, always check the top layer first.

Before your next move
- Match a tile already waiting in the tray before adding a new face.
- Prefer pairs that uncover a lower layer or open a blocked side.
- If three different faces fill the tray, pause before tapping a fourth.
