How to Play Mahjong Solitaire

The goal is simple: match pairs of free tiles until the board is clear. There is no timer, so you can learn one choice at a time.

Mahjong Solitaire—also written Mahjongg Solitaire or Mah-Jongg Solitaire—is a single-player tile-matching puzzle, not the traditional four-player game.

Mahjong Solitaire rules in four steps

1

Find a free tile

Look for a tile with no tile on top and an open left or right long side.

2

Find its match

Choose another free tile with the same symbol. Flowers match other flowers, and seasons match other seasons.

3

Remove the pair

Tap both tiles. Removing them opens new tiles and creates your next choices.

4

Clear the layout

Continue matching until no tiles remain. If you need help, use hint, undo, or shuffle.

What counts as a free tile?

A tile is free when no other tile covers it and at least one of its long sides—the left or right—is open. A tile trapped between two neighbors cannot be selected, even when you can see its face. In stacked layouts, always check the top layer first.

Matching flowers and seasons

Most pairs need the exact same face. Flower tiles are an exception: any flower can match another flower. Season tiles work the same way. Calm Mahjong makes these special groups visually distinct so they are easier to recognize.

Simple strategies that keep options open

  • Remove tiles that uncover the largest number of hidden tiles.
  • When the same symbol appears more than twice, compare which pairing opens more space.
  • Try to keep both sides of the layout moving instead of clearing only one edge.
  • Use undo to explore a different choice; use hint or shuffle when you want help.
